🦝 Cheap Meals, Local Art, and Toronto's Great Gatsby

What's happening in the West End July 17th to 21st.

Happy almost-Friday Toronto and welcome to this week’s Raccoon.

As you can infer from receiving this email I did survive my portage trip last week. Although I’m not sure if you can truly call it surviving as I’ve spent the days since inching the hundreds of bug bites I received. Moral of the story: don’t leave the city. Ever.

This is the part of the newsletter where I tell you there’s a ton of fun events down below. Let’s skip this part today. It’s the middle of July. We all know there’s fun stuff.

🎉 Big On Bloor

Saturday & Sunday on Bloor between Lansdowne and Dufferin

Toronto street festival season continues this weekend in Bloordale with the 19th year of Big On Bloor! This festival will be a bit different from the others you may have already visited this summer. Instead of being chock full of vendors and shopping options, Big On Bloor will be filled with local art. Expect big murals, community painting workshops, and concerts by local bands. There will even be a youth market, where kids can set-up tables and trade/sell anything they wish. (Note: arrive thirsty for lemonade) More info here.

🕰 1920’s Garden Party

Sunday 12PM @ Spadina House

This event is CETWEOK! CETWEOK is my new acronym and it stands for “Close Enough To (The) West End, OK”. I think it’s really gonna catch on. Also - right now I use Bathurst as rough Eastern border, someone please tell me if this is sacrilegious or not.

Embrace your inner Gatsby (or Daisy) at this festival inspired by a real garden party that took place in Toronto in 1928. The day will feature live music, free workshops, and a bunch of local vendors selling antiques and other funky vintage things. Let's be honest old sport - there aren't many more opportunities coming along to bust that flapper dress out of the closet. $28, Details

West End Updates

Great Food Deals All Weekend

The city’s “Summerlicious” program is in full swing, with over 200 restaurants offering discounted prix fixe meals until July 20th. During this event all participating restaurants will offer meals locked into one of six pre-selected price points. This is a great opportunity to discover new cuisines and hidden gems within our neighbourhood. By my count we have around 30 spots in the West End participating in the program, with options spanning everything from a $20 three-course Venezuelan lunch at Bar Bacan to a $75 seafood feast at Chiado on College. Full list of restaurants and meals here.

🔥 West End, Is Your AC Feeling the Heat?

After this week’s scorcher, your AC might be begging for a break! Air conditioners can start struggle during in these high pressure environments - think Mitch Marner in the playoffs. If you want to keep being hit with that blast of cool air when you open the door, it may be time to take action.

Whether it’s servicing, installing, or emergency repairs, the team at El Arrow is ready to keep you cool and comfortable all summer long. Don’t sweat it - we’re local, fast, and we’ve got your back. Call Elran today at (416) 832-1409.

Vintage Store Relocates In The Junction

The beloved vintage shop “Thus” has moved to a new location in The Junction. Previously located on Keele, the store can now be found on Dundas W opposite Indie Ale House. This new location will continue to be a great spot to find amazing vintage clothing, cool art/posters, and lots of throwback Toronto merch. More info on their Instagram

West End Breakfast Battle

Finally….. it’s time…… for the WEST END BREAKFAST BATTLE TO BEGIN! Ten restaurants nominated by the community have entered the bracket but only one will emerge to claim the title of the West End’s Favourite Breakfast.

We start with two match-ups in which the victor will progress to the quarter-finals.

Matchup #1:
Skyline Restaurant (Queen West) vs Masa Deli & Café (Dovercourt)
To begin we have a battle between old-school and new school! Skyline Diner has been around forever slinging old school diner fare in Parkdale. It even has a documentary and an album written about it (Andy Shauf).

Masa Deli has only been open for a few years, but a quick scroll through social media will show you hundreds of comments lauding it as the “Best Breakfast” in the city. Their signature sandwiches (especially the Kale one) will make a lasting imprint on any brekky lover.

Matchup #2:
The Ace (Roncesvalles) vs The Federal (Dundas West)
The Battle of The “The”s! In one corner we have The Ace, re-opened in 2021 and serving up delicious weekend brunches in its retro interior. This spot boasts a Michelin “Bib Gourmand”, commending it for great food at reasonable prices.

In the other corner The Federal stands tall, offering a tasty suite of options including Belgian Waffles and “Eggs Federal”. These are two awesome awesome spots, but unfortunately only one can progress.

Voting:

The link will just take you to the restaurant’s website and then I’ll tally the vote to see how many people clicked on each. Clicking on a link more than once will have no impact.

Fancy House of the Week

Today’s fancy house is 17 Grafton Ave. Tucked in behind Roncesvalles and Queen, this place is a 4 bed 5 bath with 3500 square feet of living space. Highlights include a glass fireplace, an extra large island, and a balcony attached to the master bedroom.

On an unrelated note, can someone explain to me why real estate agents feel the need to capitalize every word in their listings. It Feels So Weird To Read, It’s Like One Giant Indie Song Title. $2.7 Million, Listing And Capitalization Here.
